Steeped in Celebrity History, the Historic B-Bar-H Guest Ranch Outside of Palm Springs Hits the Market

“Let there be no two strangers between these walls” Charles Bender, B-Bar-H and Ranch

Located just a few miles north of Palm Springs in the historic Seven Palms Valley, sits the famed B Bar H Ranch. Steeped in rich celebrity history, the Ranch dates back to 1927, when Hollywood film mogul Lucien Hubbard and his son-in-law, Charles Bender, purchased 240 acres from Southern Pacific Land Co.

The Ranch became a hub for prominent politicians, business people, and bankers to socialize with Hollywood stars, writers, and musicians. According to Palm Springs Historical Society records, ranch guests included many celebrities from the Golden Age of Hollywood: Bob Hope, Ray Milland, Bing Crosby, Ronald Coleman, Tyrone Power, Joan Crawford, Lionel Barrymore, Irene Dunne, Eleanor Powell, Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine, Gary Cooper, Marlene Dietrich, Robert Taylor, Joseph Selznick, and Darryl Zanuck. The Ranch remained an exclusive invitation-only resort until it was opened to the public in 1937.

B Bar H Ranch was closed to the public in 1950, and the Ranch changed hands several times over the years. In 2005 the lots surrounding the Ranch were divided and subdivided, and a local developer named Mark Bodon built close to 100 mid-century modern style homes. He named the houses after cocktails: Manhattan, Cosmopolitan, Gibson, Brandy Alexander, and Bellini. The bar, then called The Branding Iron and still sporting the original men’s and women’s restroom signs, now serves as a VFW post.

A Rare Opportunity with Endless Possibilities

Steeped in rich celebrity history, the former ranch clubhouse can now be yours. “The possibilities are endless for a buyer to create a private compound, retreat, bed and breakfast or resort, on this unique property with a glamorous history,” says listing agent David Sidley of Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty.

The walled and gated compound is surrounded with private patios, bubbling fountains, indoor and outdoor jetted spa tubs. Inside features include two kitchens and a huge studio that can be used as an artist retreat, recording studio, film studio, or whatever your heart desires.

Modern updates throughout the property include copper plumbing, Italian tile, updated electrical, and much more.

As the vintage brochure from B-Bar-H Ranch Club says, ‘As a desert spa, B-Bar-H has no equal.’
